Distinguished and Famous people from Devonport

🏛️ Dame Enid Lyons

Dame Enid Lyons made her family home at Home Hill in Devonport, the house built for the Lyons family in 1916. After the death of her husband, prime minister Joseph Lyons, she developed her own federal political career. In 1943 she became the first woman elected to the House of Representatives, and in 1949 the first woman to serve in federal cabinet. Home Hill preserves another side of that public achievement: family possessions, rooms extended for a large household and the garden she helped shape.

Her political work included arguments for better conditions for mothers, widows and housewives, and against discrimination towards women at work. She had been an experienced public speaker well before entering federal parliament, and had contested a Tasmanian state election in 1925. These concerns add substance to the succession of firsts: she sought to bring family and women’s experiences into parliamentary decisions.
